Notes to the development team:The goal is to have 15 lessons that work well and are teachable in one semester.
most colleges seem to be using a 4 unit course rather than a 3 unit course. So we will need to account for and provide strategies for using the same curriculum to teach either course schedule. (Breakaways, extra practice sessions, extra testing, etc.)As we consider what topics, skills, and vocabulary to teach we need to make distinctions in levels so that we don't try to teach everything about every "worthy" topic during the first semester. Because for each thing that goes in, something must come out.
For example, "giving directions."
I want you to ask yourself, does "giving directions" (beyond the very, very basics) belong in a level 1 class? Why or why not? How frequently will this be used? In reality, will other strategies be employed? (For example: Writing the address then using Google maps?) I'm totally open, I just want to make sure we focus on things in the absolute most effective order of introduction based on scientific research combined with our many years of experience (gut).
If we consider "direction giving" to be a fundamental skill (and to some extent I do) we next need to consider:
Level 1 direction giving vocabulary and skills:
Level 2 direction giving vocabulary and skills:
Level 3 direction giving vocabulary and skills:
etc.
By considering the long term perspective we can avoid the sense of having to cram everything into the same semester.
Also, let's remember, the goal is not to copy some other curriculum, but to be groundbreaking in the usefulness of our curriculum.
Lifeprint Development:Level 1:
Skill: Indexing on non-dominant handSkill: Use of space for comparing and contrastingApplication: Talking about family
Lesson: (?) Lesson 2 (?)
Note: I show indexing on the non-dominant hand in lesson 2 in one of the stories, but I can see how we need to make it an actual listed skill.
Let's set a time to video you describing your family using "listing" and "comparing" behaviors and then I'll upload it to the website.
[Note to teachers: You are welcome to use the Lifeprint Curriculum to teach your classes.
Please know though that small improvements and revisions are made to the lessons frequently. -Dr. V]

Note: "qm-w" stands for question mark wiggle. That is the process of holding an "x" hand up at the end of a sentence and wiggling the index finger (flexing it a few times.). When a sign gloss has an "!" exclamation point after it that means you should emphasize the sign. Sign it a bit faster and/or a bit more exaggerated than normal.
Note: "GROW (shift) GROW" means to sign "GROW" then move the sign a bit to the side and sign it again. This is a way of saying "garden." Some people sign "GROW" with a "G" handshape and call it an "initialized" form of the sign for garden, (I'd put that in the category of signed English rather than ASL).
Note: When done with two hands, the sign LOW can also mean "demote."
