How to use this study guide:

Open your Vista Signing Naturally (Level 2) Workbook to Unit 13 and flip over to page 20 (the exact page may vary depending on which edition you are using).
You will notice rows of pictures of people signing.
Most of the time you will be able to "figure out" what they are signing by looking at the picture next to the person signing.

Occasionally though you could probably use some help figuring out what is being signed.
For example the fourth item on page 20 shows a picture of a "door" but the signs being done next to the picture are typically labeled in most ASL dictionaries as "FRONT" and "ENTER."

You can see how easy it would be to mistakenly think that the sign "FRONT" means "door." It doesn't. There is a different sign that typically is interpreted as "door."  The authors of the workbook chose not to provide English equivalents because they feel that English labels restrict your understanding and usage of the signs. 

To help you study, I'm going to provide you with some of the typical interpretations of those signs to help you figure out what the pictures are trying to indicate. Keep in mind that just because I provide you an interpretation of a sign doesn't mean that there aren't other interpretations.  Depending on context and inflection most signs can convey a variety of meanings.  For example, the sign commonly glossed (written) as "SEARCH" can also mean "look-for" or "hunt" (as in "hunt for a job or your keys" but not "go deer hunting").  So, when you see an English label (gloss) for a sign, please understand that the English label is not truly an equivalent and that there might be a dozen other English interpretations for that sign and that the sign might not necessarily convey all the meanings conveyed by any particular English label.
