The Jeanpher Memorial Deaf Preschool was established in the mid 2014 after completion of the Multi-purpose building in recognition of the importance of pre-school education for Deaf children that hardly exist in Zambia. Jeanpher Memorial Deaf Preschool caters for the needs of Deaf/hearing impaired children these needs are diverse and unique. The school is named after the very first pupil who was enrolled and later on passed away. We aim to provide a natural and relaxed setting where children can engage in a range of activities provided to extend their learning and development.  The school caters for children from low income surrounding areas such as Chimwemwe, Twatasha, Racecourse and Kawama.

ENROLLMENT

Enrollment is still ongoing and so far a total of ten (10) Deaf/hearing impaired children have been enrolled and are already learning. Our objective seeks to create a challenging learning environment that encourages high expectations for success through development-appropriate instruction that allows for individual differences and learning styles. The special class will promotes a safe, orderly, caring, and supportive environment with each child's self-esteem fostered by positive relationships with fellow learners and teachers. We strive to have our parents, teachers, and community members actively involved on our children's' learning.

CHALLENGES

Though the school is currently operational, there are a number of challenges we are facing;

1.    Lack of classroom furniture i.e.  book shelves, desks, colour printer and teacher's table

2.    Transport for picking up children

3.    Feeding program for children as they come from low income earn families

4.    Visual Teaching and learning aids ( DVDs, Sign Language books, TV)

5.    Limited number of playing toys

6.    All teachers are voluntary

7.    Perishable stationary such as white board markers, papers, exercise/text  books since we are currently providing these items
