Dr. Bill Vicars "2014" Sacramento State Info and Links:

Go to 2014 Fall ►

A student mentioned to me in an email that the graduation office was telling her that she hadn't completed her Foreign Language requirement.  She indicated to me that she thought ASL fulfilled the requirement and asked me for clarification.  I clarified to her that ASL does indeed fill the qualification and I sent her a link to the Foreign Language Department's webpage stating such.  I then instructed her to present that information to the Graduation office and to stay in touch. She thanked me for confirming what she thought and added that she felt it was ridiculous that she should have to keep playing "run around" with the graduation office -- to which I replied:

[name changed to protect her privacy]

Cindy,
Remember this:  Getting a college degree isn't so much about your ability to memorize facts and figures as it is about "perseverance."
It is PRECISELY because you are willing to keep running around UNTIL you get your degree which qualifies you to get the degree.
It is a weeding out process.
Losers get tired of the "runaround" and quit.
Winners keep at it until they get that piece of paper.
Thus the value of a college degree is only partially in the learning that took place and more substantially in the "grit" that was developed in the process.
Cordially,
Dr. V

Dear Dr. Vicars,
I [am sick] [have a family emergency] [have a job interview].
Do we have a quiz today?
If so can I make it up?
Sincerely,
- Your Student

Dear Student,
I hope you [feel better soon] [get things worked out] [get the job].
Here is a link you can use to access the syllabus for this class: http://lifeprint.com/2014/fall/
At the top of the syllabus is a schedule. On that schedule you can see whether or not there is a quiz today.
Cool eh?
Also, please scroll down to the section of the syllabus titled "Make-ups" and read what the syllabus says about that.
Best wishes.
Cordially,
Dr. V
