Hi! I'm Dr. Bill Vicars, I'll be your instructor for this course.  This page is the "homeroom" for all of my registered distance education students.
You can use the links on this page to help you stay on track as you progress through this course.  I suggest you bookmark this page so you can find it again easily.

Checklist:

Have you paid?  If not visit the: Payment Page
Have you registered?  That means, "Have you sent me your contact information and other information about yourself that I need in order to keep track of you?" If not, see:  "Registration Page"
Visit and read your syllabus:  "Syllabus"

Email the me (Dr. Vicars) and identify yourself as an ASLU student and what program you are in. I also have on-campus students, so it is important that you identify which program you are in when you correspond with me. The SUBJECT LINE of your email should include: "The name of program, your name, and the topic of email."
For example:
"ASLU Jane Doe, Quiz 8"
"ASLU Emma Smith, REPLY REQUESTED."
Get your Unit Study Disk(s).  Note: ASLU independent study students:  The cost of your materials was included in your tuition.  You do not need to pay extra.

Access the study sheets on your unit disk
   Set up an answer sheet
Choose your own schedule of due dates: "Schedule"
   Take the 20 quizzes
Complete a 500 word research paper
   Take the receptive final
Submit your expressive final (video project)

Dear ASLU Registered Student,
Here is the link to your syllabus:
► Level 1 Syllabus ASLU)◄
Please read it until you understand what it will take to get the grade you want out of this course.
If you note any conflicting information or information that needs updating...do let me know.  I'm always tinkering with that website.
Your course disks should arrive within about 10 days of ordering them.  If they haven't arrived by that time, please do contact Belinda, my wife, at  BelindaGVicars(at)aol.com (note replace the (at) with the @ symbol) to inquire as to their status (she handles the shipping).
A few notes:  When you email me it is best to put in the subject line:  ASLU "first and last name" "the topic of your email"
-- That helps me stay organized and track your progress.
It is my intention someday to have the course "fully automated" in terms of feedback for quizzes.  As for now, just take them and turn them in.  When I get them I look them over lightly to see if it appears you have done them correctly.  Every once in a while (or when you specifically request) I'll send you an update indicating that I've received X number of quizzes.  If there are any signs on the website or in the video quizzes on the CDs that you are unsure about, feel free to put "reply requested" in the subject of your email and I'll get back to you within 24 to 48 hours with a specific response.  Otherwise I'm not concerned if you miss one or two on the quizzes but rather your general progress of working through the lessons and genuinely implanting the signs into your brain so you will be able to pass the receptive final with a "C" or better.
Don't worry about whether or not I've gotten a specific quiz...just keep backups so that when you get done with the course you have a file/folder with all 20 quizzes, your receptive final answers, your research paper, and a video of you signing 20 sentences from the lessons.
Feel free to email me any time for any reason. If you do not hear back from me within a reasonably short period of time, resend your email.
(I get a rather large number of emails from readers of my website.) Understand that I am not bothered at all whatsoever by my registered students sending me as many emails as they would like or need in order to succeed in their studies.
While you are waiting for your CDs it would be best if you do a complete update of your operating system. If you are using Windows, you can update your Media Player and update your Internet Explorer by using an automatic update process. You can do this by going to Internet Explorer> Tools> Windows Update...and use the update function to make sure you have all the latest service packs and patches.
Another method is to go to:http://update.microsoft.com
Cordially,
Dr. V
