An ASL hero asked how to sign the following sentence. I do not know the
source of the sentence. It might be from a textbook or some instructor's
course materials. If "you" are the one who came up with this sentence feel
free to contact me for credit or removal (Dr. Bill).
Question: What is a good way to sign "timely manner" as used in this
sentence?
Sentence: "The interpreter violated the Code of Professional
Conduct because they failed to inform everyone in a timely manner that they
couldn't finish the assignment."
Suggestion: An approach here is to use "NOT
immediately-[QUICK]-[1-handed-snap-fingers-version] INFORM-[them]." The
"QUICK-[1h-snap]" sign can convey the meaning of "right away" (without delay) --
however, that sign doesn't address the concept of "appropriateness" of time
usage -- which is necessary to deal with in this interpretation because we are
stating a violation of ethics thus something "inappropriate" has occurred.
One of a large number of possible interpretations ("recipes") we could use is:
IX TERP violated-[FORBIDDEN] CPC WHY-[rhet] IX-[terp] not-APPROPRIATE
PROCRASTINATE INFORM-[them] REMIND-[bent-hand-version] role-shift-[terp] I/ME
CAN'T STAY CONTINUE END.
The approach (above) is to organize "failed to inform everyone in a timely
manner" into:
""failed in a timely manner"
and
"to inform everyone"
-- then handle the "failed in a timely manner" phrase as meaning:
"inappropriately procrastinate."
The concept of "timely" can to some extent overlap with punctual or "sharp
(precisely on time)."
PUNTUAL / timely / on time / sharp-[on-time]
