American Sign Language: "sexual orientation"

Notes / DRAFT / Do not use or cite yet!

One of the signs listed as "orientation" in one of the LP sign pages is actually the sign for EXPOSURE / "exposed to" / "have information put into a person's head" / "instill that info into the heads of" etc. We use that sign in the local university for "Student Orientation" in which we orient (expose / inform / put info into their heads) the students in regard to the academic program they are considering.
Obviously "EXPOSURE / inform" isn't what is meant by "orientation" in the term "sexual orientation."

Some people tend to use the PREFER/FAVOR/FAVORITE sign -- and it probably is the simplest solution at this point but could also be problematic due to the fact that a "preference" is something you'd rather have but not necessarily the only option or choice.  A "preference" is not necessarily the same thing as an "orientation."  If the front of a building is oriented toward the east that building doesn't "prefer" facing east. It in fact faces east.

Additionally the sign for SEX (the one done on the cheek with an X hand contacting then moving down a couple of centimeters and contacting again) could end up being rather ambiguous since it doesn't really address the whole meaning of the term "sexual orientation."

Notes:  A student asked, "How would you sign, 'Your sexual orientation doesn't matter?'"

DRAFT notes:  One approach could be:  NOT-MATTER YOU GAY [body-shift] STRAIGHT, NOT-MATTER.

Perhaps also the concept of "pansexual" using a sign like SPECTRUM should be discussed in relation to "sexual orientation" in general.
