Question: How do you sign "propitiation?"
Answer:
An approach to signing "propitiation" in the context of "religion" is to combine
the signs for "substitute / replace" and "satisfy" which can (in context) create
a meaning that Jesus gave himself to satisfy justice (or in other words "atone"
for us).
See:
REPLACE: https://youtu.be/wW9GtJFJU40
SATISFY: https://youtu.be/0zSHZngEFRU
Then later in the same sermon you can just use the sign "satisfy" to mean
propitiation.
The context or other words in the sentence are going to affect the meaning of
the word propitiation. In some situations you might use signs such as "calm
down" or "bring together join in allyship" (show by a clasping of hands."
If you meet any Deaf who feel strongly one way or another about a different way
to sign propitiation I recommend you be flexible and consider adopting the other
version or at least certainly considering it a variation.

Hi Dr. Bill,
I'm Vincent from the Philippines. In our Church we also do sign
language, because we have deaf brethren, but there are some signs that we are so
curious and we want to know because we don't really know how to do, one of it is
"Propitiation" our sign language interpreter only SPELL that word, thats too
long to spell, i already search that on Google but unfortunately there is no
result, is there any sign for that?
I hope you can help us.
Thank you sir.

Note: I typed up a response that included using "REPLACE" and "SATISFY" to mean
"propitiation."
Vincent wrote back again asking how would the concept of "propitiation" be
signed in this sentence:
"Propitiation of my sin""
I replied:
Propitiation as in "propitiation of sin" could be signed as REPLACE+EXCUSE
which creates a meaning of "atone" + "forgive." The real issue here is you state
that you have Deaf attending your church. My advice:
Discuss this matter (the meaning of propitiation) with them and then ask them to
decide how they want the concept of "propitiation" signed and then respect their
wishes.
