The following are my (Bill Vicars) notes upon reviewing the instructional
video (Youtube ID: UtpOzRQ1EfU) by Dr. Bridget Klein.
Dr. Klein approaches the concept of "coming out" by fingerspelling it until a
signer has an understanding of "a person's unique story about coming out because
each person experiences it differently."
She then shows two versions of signs for coming out:
1. A specific (come out of the closet) sign consisting of an X being removed
from an O -- which appears to have evolved as a one fingered version of the
general GET-OUT-OF sign and can be used in low context situations to
specifically mean to "come out of the closet" but may not be widely recognized.
2. A general sign for "reveal" which, in high context situations, can be
interpreted as meaning "to come out of the closet" (the "coming out" idiom).
A careful communicator then might choose to spell (as Dr. Klein does) the
concept of "come out" or "coming out" until the context is clear.
