CHAIRPERSON-[version-1]
Many skilled ASL signers just sign CHAIR+PERSON to create the meaning of
"chairperson."
C-H-A-I-R-PERSON
Another way to express this concept is to spell CHAIR and then add the
non-initialized PERSON sign.
Notes:
CHAIRPERSON:
At the nine minutes and nineteen seconds mark of the 5/3/2019 edition of the
Daily Moth the newscaster signs CHAIRPERSON. She does so by signing CHAIR
combined with the non-initialized PERSON sign.
I point this out so that you may know that real Deaf are not afraid to sign
CHAIR and add PERSON to it to create the meaning of "chairperson."
Uptight academics, some ASL teachers, and students one chapter ahead of you in
their ASL book will try to tell you that "Oh no that is not conceptually
accurate -- you should spell C-H-A-I-R and sign PERSON.
If it makes you feel more comfortable (safe, not-a-target) then sure -- go ahead
and spell C-H-A-I-R but know this: Many skilled (native level) Deaf don't give a
[insert whatever word or words you feel like here*] what your ASL teacher said
and just sign CHAIR-PERSON to mean "chairperson."
