QUESTION:
An ASL Hero writes:
"I am looking for a sign for The Avengers, which you discussed from minutes
23-28 of your video (
https://youtu.be/k00LmFE7zlM ) but ultimately decided to shop it around some
more.
What would you now recommend?" Until I learn a more widespread option, I'm
going to go with the A-hand coming up into the open-finger hand, like DEFEND.
That was my favorite of those discussed.
ANSWER:
I'm actually sort of leaning toward the idea of signing "Avengers" by
holding up the dominant hand as if I were Tony Stark getting ready to fire a
repulsor beam from my glove while holding up my non-dominant forearm as if I
were Captain America holding his shield.
Even if no one understands me I will at least get to feel strong and heroic each
time I sign it.
I suppose an interesting "idea" (but I haven't actually /personally seen anyone
use it) would be to hold up the non-dominant hand using a curved L to depict
half of a circle (which in turn suggests the other half as well) and then slap
the dominant "A" hand into the middle of the circle -- thus depicting the
Avenger's logo (the one that consists of a "circled A."
What we really need around here are some MCU / comic convention-attending Deaf
Superhero nerds let us know how they refer to the Avengers at conventions (comicons)
when discussing the Avengers for hours on end.
