Announcement of program change:

The "Sacramento State 2016 Summer of Sign" advanced ASL course program has been moved to Fall 2016 and turned into a hybrid course consisting of a blend of online study and 15 in-person meetings. This was done to help make the course more affordable to students at Sacramento State (where summer course offerings receive no state-supported funding).

It isn't that students don't want to take summer classes -- many students just can't AFFORD to take the courses under the current system. To take just one course during the summer would cost a student $1,264.00.  The math looks like this:
Mandatory Special Term Fee for continuing Sacramento State students: $409.00
DEAF 164: $855.00 (based on 3 units at $285 per unit)
Cost for participation in the course: $1,264.00

The summer section was originally set up to address the fact that the expanded waitlist was full for the former single course offering of DEAF 164 ("ASL Structure and Usage") for Fall 2016 at Sac State.  Numerous students literally could not graduate in a timely manner unless "something" was done. We created a summer section of the course but it was too expensive for students to afford so we instead have moved that section to Fall 2016 as a second section of DEAF 164.  To fit it into the existing schedule and classroom availability we converted both sections to hybrid (blended online and classroom instruction).

We realize that a 15-week schedule makes it difficult impossible for working adults and those living beyond the Sacramento region to participate in the course.  For those who cannot afford or attend this new version of the course the instructor has placed a series of free instructional videos online at:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6akqFwEeSpjjtIRF9vQuHkbfyWk_1FJT  -- in which he recorded himself teaching the course content.  Please note that the video series is taught in the target language (ASL) and intended for individuals who have completed ASL 4 or the equivalent -- no close captioning, no voicing, and no interpreter. This is intentional in an effort to help turn our students into skilled signers.
