Sign Language Journal:  About

The Sign Language Journal is a record and gallery of the experiences, observations, ideas, and creations of sign language professionals and those who are using sign language to enhance other fields.  The focus of the Journal is on the teaching, acquisition, use, and application of signed languages.

We are interested in articles addressing new developments in the field of American Sign Language instruction, technology-enhanced course delivery, innovative teaching approaches, universal design, online curricula, bilingual-bicultural methodology, and the use of signed languages to facilitate cognition and literacy.

The Journal is published online on a continuing basis as new articles become available.  The journal is published to an opt-in email list of 10,000 Teachers, Parents, and Students who have self-identified as being interested in the field of Sign Language. The email carrier for this list is Topica.com

What is your current editorial arrangement?
The current editor in chief is William G. Vicars who holds a doctoral degree in Deaf Education / Deaf Studies.

The board are responsible for selecting articles for inclusion in the Journal. Each member of the board is either Deaf or has many years of experience with sign language. Each member currently works in the field of Sign Language Studies.

Copyediting and proofreading are handled by Belinda Vicars.  She holds a Masters Degree in Creative Writing.

What is your editor’s rotation and what process do you use to find a future successor:
At this time there is no rotation schedule for the position of Editor. Future successors will be selected by the retiring editor from a pool recommended by the Board.

What is your timetable for manuscript decisions?
The online journal is officially updated once per spring semester and once per autumn semester. Decisions are therefore made a minimum of every six months. However if manuscripts are submitted electronically there is a much greater chance of a relatively quick turn around time.

What sort of financial and institutional support does the journal receive?
Web hosting is provided by Lifeprint.com. Office space, bandwidth, and equipment is provided by the university affiliate (California State University - Sacramento). We have designed the Journal to be very cost effective by using online publishing and print-on-demand publishing.

What makes this journal different?
This journal is affiliated with Lifeprint.com which also sponsors "ASL University" and the "Lifeprint Library."
Lifeprint.com is a leading ASL resource site which is commonly ranked in the Google top ten for the keywords: "learn ASL."

What are your advertising rates?
We do not accept advertising.

What are the future goals for the journal?
We will grow with the profession:  Video articles, teaching resources, efficient linking of researchers and students to the information they are seeking.
