Assignment List
Assignment #1:
Read the Introduction to Classifiers in ASL and Chapter 1-Non-Manual Signals in your reader. For additional information, go to http://www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-layout/classifiers.htm. Submit your answers based on the five questions on page 21 of Chapter 1 (Non-Manual Signals).
Assignment #2: Descriptive Classifiers
Indicate thickness, width, or depth (SASSes) of objects based on the #2 handout. Send videotaped clip via YouTube, on a flash drive, or another approved means with prior instructor approval. Read Chapter 3: Mouthing in American Sign Language. Submit your answers based on the six questions on page 27.
Assignment #3: Semantic Classifiers
View the movie clips in http://www.jalc.edu/ipp/Classifiers/index.html. Worksheet: Describe the semantic classifiers and their meanings for CL:1; CL:2; CL:3; CL:A. FYI: some of the clips (such as C, F, U, and ILY) are not classifiers, but hand-shapes. Do NOT confuse between hand-shapes/storytelling/miming with true ASL Classifiers. Read Chapter 5-Non-Manual Modifiers and come to class ready to demonstrate sentences from Ch 5 Review (page 40).
Assignment #4: Plural/Locative Classifiers
Based on Lon’s description of Home Depot (SN Level 2 Unit 13 videotext/workbook, page 14), come up with 1-2 minute long videoclip incorporating plural and locative classifiers (i.e. describing your garage, describing your favorite grocery store, etc.)
Assignment #5: Element Classifiers
Air/Wind/Smoke—Come up with two ECL (written in gloss with CL symbols) for each category listed in the Describing Elements sheet in your reader.
Assignment #6: Instrumental Classifiers
Prepare an original short story (1 minute long) using at least 2 Depictive and 2 Manipulative Classifiers. Non-Manual Markers giving linguistic and affective information must be present in your text. You will be performing your narrative in class. Worksheet: Describe how each item works using gloss and CL symbols.
Assignment #7: Body and Body Part Classifiers
Translate “Driving Home” into ASL. Non-Manual Markers and Classifiers must be present in your translation. Send your videotaped clip via YouTube, on a flash drive, or another approved means with prior instructor approval.
Assignment #8: Classifiers Analysis
Write down the classifiers and their meanings as told by Charles Katz in “There’s a Nightmare in my Closet”.
Assignment #9: Classifiers Analysis
Write down the classifiers and their meanings as told by Charles Katz in "The Snowy Day”.
Assignment #10: In Class Narratives
Prepare for a 2 minute narrative, dialogue, or story incorporating ALL of the classifiers you have learned thus far.
