Dr. Bill Vicars' CSUS Notes page:

Dear Students,
The CSUS Deaf Studies program is one of the strong programs that isn't in danger of going away.
It is true that we have had to cut back on the number and frequency of class offerings.  But that is temporary due to the budget.
The straight dope: The budget crisis has hurt EVERY program at CSUS.  Thus we are indeed impacted.  We were impacted "severely" regarding our "part time" instructor budget.  The dean has cut EVERY Department's part time budget.  Thus we are temporarily losing many, many part timers.  We went from 103 units down to about 58 units.
Thus for the next couple of semesters  we may be down to our 4 full time instructors.
At worst, we could lose one of our full time instructors due to a temporary lay off.
But we have a plan in place that would allow us to offer the major even if we were down to 3 instructors.
Cordially,

Dr. Bill

ASL Major: See: http://edweb.csus.edu/eds/deaf_studies/asl_major.html

Note: the information below is NOT official.  See the CSUS.edu website for official information

1.  EDS 166 move to Wednesdays at 9:00.  Move 163 to Mondays at 1:00
2.  Add EDS 151 and 152  to Winter intersession
3.  Offer EDS 199 in lieu of 162 during winter intersession ONLY for those who are able to graduate Spring 2010
4.  Offer EDS 199 in lieu of EDS 166 during summer intersession ONLY for those for whom this is the LAST class needed for graduation.
5.  Add EDS 155 Tues/Thurs 5pm to 6:15
6.  Allow students to sign up for EDS 199 as part of a 3-day no voice immersion and online study hybrid course. (Otherwise known as an "ASL Safari")  Note: this last item was instrumental in helping mitigate the impact of the (alleged) loss of FTEs to Continuing Education. For more details see me in person or wait for the flyer.

Note, I will be donating my time for the spring EDS 199 Immersion program.  (And thank you to Lisalee who has also been donating her time and effort.)
Note:  The Winter Intersession and Summer offerings of EDS 199 will be PAID.  The pay will be prorated according to the number of participants.
Note:  If any of you would like to be considered to teach a "handful" of students during Winter Intersession (EDS 199 in lieu of EDS 162) please do let me know soon, otherwise I will offer it to those who are in the Continuing Education pool of instructors according to the published guidelines.
Note: It is my feeling that Jennifer should be the one to teach the Summer EDS 199 offering in lieu of EDS 166. (I believe she is the one who suggested it in the first place.) If any of you feel differently you are welcome to explain your rationale.

From the Journal of Safari Bill:

Wahoo!
  Safari Bill rides again!

Hello ASL Heroes!
Hold on to your wigs and hats folks!!!  I've been approved for a “Research and Creative Activity Grant” for autumn semester 2009.  The grant includes travel funds and six units of assigned time to conduct lexicography* research in Taipei, Taiwan.

While I'm sure you are about ready to throw a party and hold a parade for me, (thanks, truly), instead you might want to use the energy to take another look at the Summer and Fall 2009 course schedule because this grant does have the side effect of necessitating some changes in the ASL and Deaf Studies class offerings.
Now, no need to reach for your tissues and tranquilizers folks.  Even though I'm going to the other side of the world I'm not dropping off of the Earth.  I'll be in Taipei for only about two weeks. The rest of the time (if you need to link up with me) I'll be in my office chained to my computer "crunching the data" and building the Lifeprint website bigger and better with more goodies for you to play with online.
-- Dr. Bill

* Lexicography refers to the creation, development, and editing of dictionaries. I am an American Sign Language Lexicographer.
*
* Consolidating those courses to one day a week saves a boatload of travel time.
